Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the Western
zodiac and is symbolised by the Archer. Typically for the ebullient
and larger than life Sagittarian, your constellation itself is also
rather large when compared to many of its celestial neighbours. Its
stars are not especially bright, but Sagittarius does enjoy the unique
distinction of containing the true centre of our own galaxy. The centaur
is also commonly associated with this sign, marking a connection that
stretches back to the classical traditions of ancient Greece and Rome.
Rather like the mythological centaur and its twin half human and half equine
nature, the typical Sagittarian is actually composed of two vastly differing
sides. While this isn’t
unusual for those born under any mutable sign, it is more connected in this instance
with the power of your ruling planet. Jupiter is the largest planet and is second
only in size to the Sun in our solar system. It exerts
a positive and a largely beneficial influence on your moods and behaviour, that
manifests through your inherent good humour and optimism, but which also confers
a philosophical inclination, a deep-seated curiosity and a burning desire to
learn more about other people and the world.

Your interest in great schools of thought
and in the ideas that have shaped modern society relates both
to the higher mind and to continuing study as a consequence. This illustrates
the human side of the centaur, the side that considers itself to have
risen above its more bestial origins. At the same time the horse
ensures the centaur will always retain a fourfold footing in the real
world, with quite an earthy perspective and the ability to soar unscathed,
over all but the most insurmountable of obstacles.
In the interests of mind-expansion, most Sagittarians love travelling. Depending
on other influences, this can be anything from a penchant for unusual holidays,
through to the full-scale exploration of uncharted lands. Underneath it all,
the essential motivation is nearly always the same. You journey not to avoid
life or to escape from your difficulties, but more in the pursuit of wisdom and
to savour new experience. In many ways it is actually the journey that you
enjoy the most. You may find once you have arrived that boredom begins to creep
in, accompanied very soon afterwards by those tempting thoughts of pastures new …
You’re much more likely to travel in the interests of soaking up the local
atmosphere and traditions, rather than simply lying on the beach or propping
up the hotel bar. In reality you are probably quite a pro at doing both these
things too, but the learning experience will always be your primary motivation.
Besides, remembering your fondness for wide open spaces, you might decide that
a break in the countryside or a walking, riding or cycling holiday would suit
you better than the standard two weeks by the sea. Sagittarians always have a
particularly affinity with those from different societies and cultures, and such
differences help to keep your relationships alive. As you gradually discover
more about other people, you will broaden your insight into your own condition
and outlook too.

Since learning and increasing your range
of experience is really what you adore, your fondness for physical
travel is accompanied by a strong desire to extend your intellectual
horizons, and to continue developing your own personal knowledge and
understanding. Again this can cover a broad spectrum of activities,
with everything from reading widely and watching the Discovery
Channel, through to the active pursuit of further and higher education
in a post-compulsory scenario. As ruler of the ninth house your sign
is traditionally connected with philosophy, politics and religion.
All Sagittarians love books and are endlessly fascinated by great thinkers
and influential ideas.
So amid all this earnest and worthy erudition, how come the reputation of Sagittarius
as the clown of the zodiac, the amiable and insanely optimistic buffoon who will
gamble their last coin, win enough to buy a car, overtake three other cars on
a hairpin bend and still come home in time for tea? The truth is that this is
you as well, only your more equine component this time. You’ll have heard
about horsing around?
When it comes to the real world, you simply aren’t going to let it get
you down. You have an affirmative attitude, greet every obstacle as an opportunity
and only rarely feel miserable, disillusioned or hurt. No matter how the actions
of others seem to undermine your exalted ideals, you acknowledge that you have
grown yourself and will permit others equal freedom to do the same. Overall you
are best described as cheerful, enthusiastic, positive, proactive, tolerant
and philosophical. You may concentrate overly on the big issues, but simply can’t
abide anything you consider small-minded. You will happily leave it to others,
where any pickiness or criticism is concerned! |
