- capricorn : the sea-goat - CAPRICORN ~ THE SEA-GOAT

22nd. December ~ 19th. January

Capricorn is the tenth constellation of the Western zodiac. Since at least 1000 BC it has been associated with the Sea-Goat, a goat with the tail of a fish, and its astrological glyph reflects this unusual combination of themes.

However, despite this watery connection Capricorn is an earth sign, better likened to the mountain goat where its symbolism is concerned. Thus Capricorns climb their own personal mountains - sure-footed and solid in the face of difficult terrain. By slowly and cautiously pursuing their upward direction, their aims are usually attained.

This is aided by their ruling planet Saturn. Linked astrologically with hard work, discipline, structure, duty and responsibility - without it nothing of lasting benefit would ever be achieved. Nonetheless problems, difficulties, limitations, restrictions, inhibition and a distinct lack of fun are never far away from its influence.

Capricorns typically embody their ruling planet’s principles. They are practical, prudent, careful, methodical, responsible, reliable and are firmly anchored in the material world. This sign’s natural association with the tenth house often places a considerable emphasis on career, ambition and position within the community. Remember that generational influences must also be considered here - ‘marrying well’ was perhaps a more acceptable option for female Capricorns until recent decades. There is typically a great focus on achievement, with most Capricorns feeling the constant need to further their objectives. It can be hard for them therefore, simply to relax.

These are not extrovert characters. They are serious, self-contained and value their privacy. The main focus in their lives is their work, their duties and responsibilities - so they like the time to pursue these unhindered. Their outlook is usually quite conventional, and they judge themselves and their accomplishments through mainstream values. It is vital to be well thought of by others. A lot is directed into achieving a position of respect and quiet prominence.

Consequently, Capricorn is ideally suited to the world of business. There are many with this sign conspicuous who have doggedly pursued their objectives, putting in long hours and enduring considerable personal sacrifice along the way, but who have slowly and carefully risen to the top of their chosen profession. Their financial acumen is acute and some Capricorns are mean. They are unlikely to spend frivolously and always seek a good return.

Positions of responsibility within large organisations are probably their ideal situation, although those born under this sign will always need to work hard. Life is often something of a struggle, particularly in its earlier stages. Nonetheless, by careful and disciplined effort the ability does exist to scale the heights. Always mature for their years, Capricorn grows into itself and tends to become more successful with age. Later life is often much happier.

Frequently reserved, self-deprecating and actually rather lacking in confidence - the most favourable Capricorn expression perceives this as a spur to greater attainment. Others, however, never really overcome their inherent feelings of inferiority - pursuing safe but menial and unrewarding tasks far beneath their true capabilities.

Emotionally Capricorn can be somewhat cold, calculating and inhibited. They are inwardly very sensitive, but this is played down and kept firmly under control by their own strong sense of propriety. Their major focus on externals inclines them to underestimate their emotional needs. They may tend towards pessimism and a miserable and restrictive attitude, although their sardonic humour has been known to attract many fans.

In the end, these souls seek to prove themselves through worldly success. As they strive to further their ambitions, they should always maintain tolerance and understanding for those to whom life is not such a serious business.
